Turn a Day of Service into a Life of Impact

mlk_blog_feature-259x297.jpgEach year, on the third Monday of January, Martin Luther King Jr. is honored by committing a day of service to bettering the community. This year, we challenge you to use your day of service to make a long-term commitment* to advocating for children in the foster care system by becoming a CASA volunteer. After all, Martin Luther King Jr. said, “We must use time creatively, in the knowledge that the time is always ripe to do right.”

We encourage you to take this day off from work to learn about the needs of kids in the child welfare system. Take some time to learn about disproportionalityhonoring different cultures, how we advocate for kids of all ages, how we can better serve LGBTQ youth in foster care, and why we should celebrate family reunification.

Committing to advocating for a child for the full extent of their case isn’t a small choice, but the large impact you can have on the life of that child and their family can be everlasting. Read about how seemingly small acts of grace by CASA volunteers impacted some of the children we serve, like ensuring Tyler had a safe place to sleep during Hurricane Harvey, providing a teen with their school records and crucial information, and finding a place for Sofia to call home at a local shelter for survivors of abuse.

“An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.” This we at CASA believe to be true. On the third Monday of January, we encourage you to become attuned to the broader concerns of children in your community and help us reach our goal to serve 2,000 kids in the foster care system in 2019.

On the third Monday of January, will you honor Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy by RSVPing for a Volunteer Info Session or applying to become a CASA volunteer? After all, the time is always ripe to do right.

*We ask that CASA volunteers commit to the lifetime of a case, on average 17 months, but we also have shorter Family Engagement and Early Family Engagement opportunities available!
