Qunisha Simmons shares her story of growing up in foster care

May 02 2012

Spring is filled with many opportunities to remind people in Austin about the issues of child abuse and youth living in foster care. We address these issues all the time at CASA and in our advocacy for children, but National Child Abuse Prevention Month in April and National Foster Care Month in May provide a larger stage for these important discussions. Right now, National Foster Care Month lets us shine a light on the experiences of the more than 400,000 children and youth in the foster care system nationwide. In Texas alone there were more than 29,000 children in foster care in 2010.

Foster care alumna Qunisha Simmons served as our keynote speaker last month at our Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. Today we wanted to share some of the highlights of her speech to our volunteers, including her experiences growing up in care and her recommendations to youth in foster care and the adults who advocate for them. While Qunisha is a San Diego native, we are so happy that she made her way to Austin and is speaking up to help improve the foster care system in our community.
