So I have been a superhero fundraiser for going on 9 years, and I only turned 10 years old this month! I have been supporting and raising money for CASA as long as I can remember, literally! This is a very important cause for my mom and me. She worked as a prosecutor on Child Protective Services cases and saw firsthand what the personal circumstances are for these kids on a day to day basis. A CASA volunteer helps hold their hand to the other side of this. I love helping to put those volunteers in place, because we all need someone to hold our hand even if we are heroes ourselves. Like any child growing up, I had many dreams, such as going to college, becoming a movie director, marrying the person of my dreams and having a family. After meeting my partner, I realized one of those four things would not come true for me. I would never become a movie director. I never really had the right eye for directing anyway. However, all my other dreams, of being a mother, being a professional and being a wife, are still in my future.

I realize that my future family might look different and that’s okay. I also realize that this is not something I chose, but rather my heart chose for me. It was an adjustment not only for myself but for my family and friends. Read More

In my early years, back to school season typically commenced in late July when my craving for the smell of new books and Mr. Sketch markers came to a head. For weeks, I would consistently pester my mom about back-to-school shopping until she finally caved and took me to Target. I would plan my outfits weeks in advance, my backpack packed and ready to go at a moment’s notice. Read More

For the Brian family, being a superhero is a job that begins before you even start walking. About to enter their sixth year of the CASA Superhero Run, they started running after Julia stumbled on a Facebook post. She knew that her son, Will, then two years old, was developing a fascination with superheroes, so she signed up. She and Jason ran the race and Will came along in a stroller. They had a great time at the race and Will loved meeting all of the superheroes, but what really sold them on making the CASA Superhero Run a yearly event was someone they met along the way. This woman was an adult now, but had grown up in foster care and was running with the woman who had been her CASA volunteer back when she was a child. Meeting this woman and her former CASA volunteer helped the Brians understand what it was they were running for, and they decided to come back again the next year and for four more after that.
