How old do I have to be to volunteer?
Volunteers must be 21 years old to actively serve on a case. If an applicant will turn 21 by the conclusion of their preferred training cycle, they are also eligible to apply.
How long does it take to fill out the application?
Approximately 15-20 minutes.
Can I save my application and come back to it at a later date?
Unfortunately, no. We recommended downloading a blank application (click the "Download Blank Application" button in the upper-right-hand corner on the first page of the application) and reviewing the questions prior to beginning.
Do I have to live in Travis County to be a CASA of Travis County volunteer?
No, applicants do not need to physically reside in Travis County to volunteer with our program. Travel requirements will be discussed in further detail during training.
Will I be background checked?
Yes. All applicants agree to complete a variety of extensive background checks. Further details will be provided after applying.
Can I be a volunteer if I have a criminal history?
It depends on the charge; not all criminal charges are an automatic bar from service. Applicants agree to list their entire criminal history including ALL arrests, charges, and convictions, even if the charge was dismissed and expunged. Applications are reviewed on an individual basis to confirm accordance with CASA's policies. Applicants will be contacted directly by the Director of Volunteer Admissions if further clarification is needed.
What if I have a drug or alcohol-related offense on my record?
One (1) or more years must have passed since the date of the offense. All applications are reviewed on a case-by-case basis to confirm accordance with CASA's policies.
Can I still be a CASA if I'm an adoptive parent?
Yes, provided the adoption was successfully consummated prior to volunteering with CASA.
Can I apply if I'm not a US citizen?
Yes, as long as the applicant has a valid social security number.
How do I reserve a spot for training?
Training cycle availability and applicant preferences will be discussed during the Pre-Training Interview.
What happens once I submit my application?
Applicants will receive email acknowledgment of their submission within 24 hours. Applications take 3-4 business days to process. Once reviewed, they will receive a phone call to schedule their Pre-Training Interview. Interviews last about 2 hours; they are designed to get to know the candidate on a personal basis, discuss training cycle preferences, and answer any questions the applicant has.
