Weighted Blankets = Powerful therapy tools for kids!

Jul 10 2014

“In psychiatric care, weighted blankets are one of our most powerful tools for helping people who are anxious, upset, and possibly on the verge of losing control. These blankets work by providing input to the deep pressure touch receptors throughout the body. Deep pressure touch helps the body relax. Like a firm hug, weighted blankets help us feel secure, grounded, and safe.” - Karen Moore, Registered & Licensed Occupational Therapist

In our work with children who’ve experienced the trauma of abuse or neglect, sometimes a weighted blanket is the very thing that will calm them and help them regulate behavior. While these blankets are expensive, we were recently able to purchase one for a teenage girl and it has proven incredibly effective for her. Her CASA volunteer visited with her last week and shared the following with us:

"I have some updates on the weighted blanket. She talked about it a good bit. She said she LOVES it, and everyone at [her placement] always tries to borrow it because it's the heaviest weighted blanket that exists, so it seems the weight you chose was a very good thing! She said that everyone loves to use it, and it basically really helps her to feel calm. She made me want one, haha."

We are looking for community partners to help purchase or make weighted blankets (in a variety of weights and sizes) to provide this important therapeutic tool to all of our children who’ve experienced trauma. If you're skilled at sewing or are interesting in contributing to this cause, check out our weighted blanket flyer and instructions and contact us at casa@casatravis.org!
