6 Reasons to donate to CASA during Amplify Austin

Update: You helped CASA raise $25,009 during Amplify Austin 2014! Thank you Austin!

Amplify Austin is a city-wide day of giving to raise millions of dollars for Austin nonprofits between 6 pm Thursday, March 20th and 6 pm Friday, March 21st! Last year you helped us raise $17,555 – enough to give more than 11 children who’ve been abused or neglected a CASA volunteer for an entire year.

For 2014, our goal is to raise $22,500 to give 15 children a CASA volunteer for a year! We need your help to hit that high note, so here are 6 reasons why you should donate to CASA during Amplify Austin:

1. Our kids are our community’s future.

They are the ones who will continue to Amplify Austin down the road and we have to watch out for them now. We have to make sure their futures are bright. One out of four youth in foster care will end up homeless or in prison. CASA is working hard to change the negative statistics around kids in foster care and build a better future for our youth, and in turn, for Austin.

2. Children in foster care who have a CASA volunteer do better than children without CASA.

Children with CASA volunteers are more likely to end up with family, more likely to receive therapy, health care and education, more likely to do better in school, less likely to be bounced from one place to another, less likely to get stuck in long-term foster care and significantly more likely to reach safe, permanent homes. Most importantly, children themselves report that they know and can rely on their CASA volunteers.

3. The children CASA serves are dealing with things no one – adult or child – should have to experience and they need every person in Austin to care about them.

They’ve experienced abuse or neglect often by the very people meant to protect them. They’ve usually left behind everything familiar to them and may be moved from home to home and school to school at any moment. They’ve been through countless traumatic experiences, and they’re just kids! They’re trying to heal, mentally and physically, from what they’ve been through, and they need the support of CASA and everyone in Austin to help them do that.

4. Keep Austin being the best!

CASA of Travis County is poised to be the first urban CASA program in the nation to provide a trained CASA volunteer for every child who needs one. Your Amplify Austin gift will help us get closer to achieving that.

5. CASA volunteers are some of the best people in Austin. Show them your appreciation with a gift to CASA!

CASA volunteers are doing an incredible amount of work, for free, to make sure kids who’ve been abused or neglected don’t fall through the cracks in an overburdened child welfare system. The volunteer work can be emotionally challenging and sometimes time-consuming, but our 600 volunteers are dedicated to these kids and they commit a tremendous amount of time and energy to making their lives better. Support their amazing work by donating today through Amplify Austin!

6. And because we have 600 volunteers, we are able to use your donation efficiently and effectively!

CASA of Travis County's cost per child per year is $1500, which covers all aspects of providing a trained volunteer and a professional staff member to support them. The guardian ad litem services CASA provides are professional services defined by the Texas Family Code and without CASA's 600 trained community volunteers to provide these services, attorneys or professional social workers would have to be paid on a per client, per hour basis. In Austin, guardian ad litem services through other entities in other kinds of cases can range from a flat fee of $2,700 for one case to as much as $75/hour for cases that could take a full year. The cost savings of providing guardian ad litem services through a non-profit organization with trained volunteers is immense, and National CASA studies have found that CASA volunteers spend significantly more time with a child than a paid guardian ad litem.
