CASA of Travis County has been appointed to 260 new children in the first 3 months of 2015. Throughout January, February and March we’ve averaged a 41% increase in child appointments in comparison to the same 3 months in 2014. There was a CASA coffee mug parked at my table as I settled into my chair for my first training session. “I am a powerful voice in a child’s life” was written on the side.

During the next three hours, I saw the magnitude of that statement as the CASA staff and trainer painted the picture of the role and huge responsibility of a CASA volunteer. This was CASA 101.

Steve Janda grew up in rural South Texas and, after graduating from nursing school at UT Galveston, decided to move to Austin where he’s lived ever since. He currently considers himself a full time volunteer. He serves on the board of his local fire department, is part of the Hays County Master Naturalist Program under Texas Parks and Wildlife, does wildlife management on his own land and has volunteered with CASA for 3 years.  Read More
